Prince George's County is an urban area of 465 square miles bordering the District of Columbia. Within the state of Maryland, Prince George’s County Prince George's County has a large and growing population, but ranks significantly higher than the Maryland average for many rates of mortality, natality, morbidity, and prevalence of chronic diseases.

Prince George’s County Prince George's County continues to be challenged by the need for an infrastructure that meets the complex health needs of its low income and/or uninsured/underinsured residents. As a racially, ethnically and linguistically diverse jurisdiction, the county's health status mirrors disparities that commonly plague minority populations and rank number one as the leading county in the state of Maryland in the following disparities:

Highest heart disease mortality rate 233.8 in the metropolitan area
Cancer mortality rate 183.8 is higher than the national average
Persons infected with HIV/AIDS (17.5%)
Infant mortality (14.3%)


In all cases, African Americans are disproportionately affected. These data and projections are critical areas of consideration as disparities in access and quality of care continue to exist among minority populations. Currently, Prince George's County does not have the essential primary care resources to meet the needs of its uninsured/underinsured and underserved populations.



Crime:

Prince George's County has more domestic violence than any other jurisdiction in Maryland- 21% of the violence cases filed statewide, according to the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence.

African American women experiencing domestic violence are more likely than not to be unaware of their male partner's risk factors for HIV infection (such as unprotected sex with multiple partners, sex with men, or injection drug use) and experience stressful situations.

Second highest number of residents reporting drug abuse or dependence in Maryland (2.85% of the County population, State level is 2.88%).

These areas have the highest crime rates, stagnant economic development status communities and high unemployment. The percent of families living below the poverty level in these areas range between 7-11.9%. Individuals living in these areas feel disenfranchised and many have a mistrust of the government.
